The department of traumatology and orthopaedics of the Tashkent Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education (Center for the development of professional qualification of medical workers) was founded in 1940 under the leadership of B.I. Berliner. The establishment of the department coincided with the period of the great patriotic war, in connection with which the staff of the department was not limited to the training of doctors-specialists, but also engaged in scientific work related to the treatment of invalids of the great patriotic war. In 1952 the chair was transformed into the course of assistant professor and reorganised. During this period the assistant of the chair Marchenko M.I. headed the course.

In 1955, the course began to be headed by N.M. Shamatov. In 1960, when Shamatov was elected again the course of assistant professor was transformed into the Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, the head of the department became N.M. Shamatov, also the staff of the department included M.I. Marchenko and V.V. Sinev. Already in 1964 the department had 5 people and the head of the department was Professor N.M. Shamatov, Associate Professor V.V. Sinev, assistants K.M. Maksumova, U.S. Islambekov, Sh.S. Khamraev.

In June 1975, after defending his doctoral thesis, Sh. Khamraev was elected head of the department and in 1976 he was awarded the academic title of professor.

In 1985, due to the resignation of Professor Sh.Sh. Khamrayev, Doctor of Medical Sciences U.S. Islambekov was appointed Head of the Department. F.K. Instead of Maksumova, candidate of medical sciences A.I. Giyosov was appointed as an assistant, who worked until 1988. Later candidate of medical sciences K.R. Nomozov was invited. V.V. Sinyov worked at the department as an associate professor until 1992.
1992 in connection with the retirement of associate professor V.V. Sinev to the post of associate professor of the department was appointed K.R. Namazov. In 1996, Associate Professor K.R. Namozov retired as a result of illness. Since 1997 H.M. Karimov has been working as an associate professor.
U.S. Islombekov
In September 2004, Professor M.J. Azizov became the head of the department and U.S. Islambekov continued his work at the department as a professor. During M.J. Azizov's leadership of the department more than 100 scientific works were published, more than 10 inventions and useful models were developed, more than 20 scientific-practical conferences, traumatology-orthopaedic forums were held, cooperation with scientific research institutes and scientific-practical centres of foreign countries was carried out. M.J. Azizov was considered a leading specialist in adult orthopaedics, he was one of the first to introduce endoprosthesis of large joints in the Republic of Uzbekistan and made one of the largest contributions to the development of the school of traumatology and orthopaedics. Thanks to M.J. Azizov, today complex high-tech operations in the field of traumatology and orthopaedics are widely used in all regions of our republic.

M.J. Azizov headed the department until 2019, and due to his death, Associate Professor H.M. Karimov was appointed to the position of the chair. Since September 2020, the head of the department was appointed M.E. Irismetov, who still heads the department.

Currently, the teaching staff of the department includes: Head of the department, Dr.M.Sc., Prof. M.E. Irismetov, Associate Professors of the department, Dr.M.Sc. Irismetov, associate professors of the department Candidate of medical sciences H.M. Karimov and PhD B.U. Kholmatov, assistants Candidate of medical sciences A.R. Khoshimov, R.K. Kabilov.
Achievements of the department: the staff of the department has introduced the latest achievements of diagnostics and treatment in the sphere of health care of the republic. In particular, endoprosthesis of large joints, arthroscopic diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of knee and shoulder joints, modern methods of osteosynthesis (block intramedullary osteosynthesis) of long tubular bones, fixation of unstable spine with transpedicular fixators, correction of limb deformities in children. The department is one of the organisers of scientific-practical conferences and forums held in the republic in this field and participates in them with a report on modern achievements in the field of traumatology and orthopaedics.
