Department history

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Tashkent Institute for Advanced Medical Training was founded in 1966 by order No. 142 of the Tashkents Institute of Advanced Training, on the initiative of Professor H. A. Alimov.The first head of the department and organizer of the Department was Professor Alimov H. A., who then headed the department until 2001, when Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor Murtalibov S.A. took over. Currently, the head of the Department is Doctor of Medical Science, Professor U. H. Khudaiyali Alimov, who was born on 30 May 1928 in Tashkent and graduated from Tashkentsky State Medical Institute in 1948. After that, he worked as a clinical resident at Tashgosmi and then as a postgraduate student at All-Union Research Institute of General Psychiatry named after Serbsky in Moscow. After completing his graduate studies and defending his PhD dissertation, he became an assistant professor at the Psychiatry Department at Tashkosmi. From 1958-1961 he was a doctoral candidate at the All Union Scientific Center for Mental Health under the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow and successfully defended his dissertation for a Doctor of Philosophy degree.Since 1961, he has been head of the Department of Psychiatry and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Andijan Medical Institute.

In 1963, with the active participation of Professor H. A. Alimov, the Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists was organized for the first time in Uzbekistan, covering the entire Ferghana Valley. Since 1965, Professor Alimov continued his activities as the Vice-Rector of the Tashkent Institute of Advanced Medical Education, where he organized and led the Department of Psychiatry in 1966 for the very first time. From 1973 to 1997, he served as Head of the Departments of Psychiatry, Narcology, and Medical Psychology at Tashkent State Medical University.

He made a great contribution to the development of scientific psychiatry. He developed conditions for preventing relapses of schizophrenia, which have great theoretical and practical significance. The monograph "Recurrent Schizophrenia" summarizes the results of long-term clinical and retrospective studies of patients with recurrent schizophrenia, revealing the polymorphism of clinical manifestations, the course, and progression of the disease, with early onset. A variety of types of recurrent schizophrenia have been identified, including both typical and transient, between periodic episodes of schizophrenia and manic-depressive episodes, as well as between periodic episodes and paroxysmal progressive schizophrenias. Features of remission at the onset of the disease at a relatively early age were described, as well as dynamics at later stages with discussion of general and individual prognosis.

In his scientific work, H.A. Alimov also paid great attention to issues of alcoholism, studying pathogenesis, clinic and treatment, which were reflected in scientific publications. The breadth of his scientific interests is also evident in the study of mental disorders and their treatment for diabetes mellitus, one of the most common endocrine system diseases. His monograph, "Mental Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus", is dedicated to this issue.

H. A. Alimov has published over 200 scientific papers, including six monographs and a textbook on psychiatry. As editor-in-chief of "Clinical Psychiatry in Uzbekistan", he helped organize the publication of 14 volumes of scientific works, as well as an anniversary volume dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Tashkent City Psychiatric Hospital.

H.A. Alimov was one of the prominent modern psychiatrists whose work is well-known not only to specialists in Uzbekistan but also abroad. His research interests have always focused on topical issues in psychiatry and narcology, particularly schizophrenia. The subjects of his PhD and doctoral dissertations were "The clinic of psychopathic conditions after infectious encephalitis and their forensic psychiatric assessment (1954)" and "Conditions for the development of relapse of schizophrenia and some methods of prevention (1961)." In later years, he focused on the clinic of schizophrenia in the age aspect, especially on early diagnosis of remission and prevention of relapse. Of particular note is his role in organizing the first and second congresses of psychiatrists and neuropathologists, as well as scientific and practical conferences for psychiatrists in Uzbekistan.

Throughout all the years of his work at the institute, H. A. Alimov paid much attention to pedagogical, educational, methodological and scientific work. He wrote a methodological guide for psychiatry and narcology subordinates, a number of methodological developments and a textbook for medical university students "Psychiatry clinicsining mukaddimasi." H.A Alimov also made a significant contribution to the development of the psychiatric training program in Uzbekistan, and graduates of Tashkent State Medical University currently head departments of psychiatry at many medical institutions in the country. Under the supervision of Alimov, 5 PhD and 25 doctoral dissertations were completed. He actively participated in organizing scientific conferences and conferences on psychiatry and addiction in Uzbekistan.

Throughout his career, H.A. Alimov paid great attention to medical advisory work and was a consultant to several psychiatric institutions in Tashkent. The merits of his work were recognized by government awards, including the Order of Honor, medals "Veteran of Labor" and "Excellence in Healthcare", as well as the honorary title "Honored Scientist of Uzbekistan" (awarded in 1988).

Shakhzoda Askarovich Mutalibov was born in 1939 to a medical family. After graduating with honors from the Tashkent Medical Institute in 1962, he worked as a doctor for two years at the Bukhara Regional Neuropsychiatric Dispensary. In 1963-1965 he studied at the Department of Psychiatry at the Central Institute for Advanced Medical Training in Moscow, where he completed his PhD under the supervision of Academician V. M. Morozov in 1971. His doctoral thesis was titled "The Clinic of Paroxysmal Schizophrenia".

The long-term career of Professor Sh. A. Murtalibov was associated with the Tashkent Institute of Advanced Medical Training, where he worked as an assistant and associate professor, and since 1973, as the head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. The scientific interests of S. A. Muratlibov were very wide and included an in-depth study of clinical and social aspects of schizophrenia, current problems of alcoholism and alcoholic psychoses, as well as mental disorders in vascular diseases of the brain and borderline conditions. Professor Sh. Murtaliyev paid great attention to training young specialists and educated many researchers and practitioners. Under his supervision, more than 15 dissertations were completed.Professor Sh.A. Murtalibov put a lot of effort into organizing the psychiatric service, working for many years as chief psychiatrist at the Ministry of Health of Republic of Uzbekistan. He founded and led the Association of Psychiatrists in the republic. For his contributions to the health care of the republic, he was awarded with the title of "Honored Doctor of the Republic" of Uzbekistan. Shahzade Askarovich is remembered as a demanding man of himself and his employees, a principled and intelligent leader, modest and kind. His erudition, passion for science and practice, generosity in sharing knowledge and experience, simple and sincere communication, willingness to help, subtle sense of humor earned him deep respect and well-deserved authority among the staff of the department, institute, and the medical community of Uzbekistan. People who do not work in psychiatry without having an understanding of the problems of people with mental illness, or the need to dedicate themselves to solving clinical, moral, and psychological issues usually do not remain in this field. However, if a person remains a psychiatrist consciously, he is more than just a doctor to the patient. In our hearts, Shahzade Murtalibov remains such a person with a capital P.Alimov Ulugbek Khudoyarovich was born in 1963. He is a doctor of medical sciences, professor, head of the department of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Tashkent Institute for Advanced Medical Training. In 1987, after successfully graduating from Tashkent State Medical Institute, he completed his internship in psychiatry at a clinical psychiatric hospital under the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan. From 1988 to 1991, he worked as a psychiatrist in a clinic at the Research Institute for Sanitation, Hygiene, and Occupational Diseases. Simultaneously, he was a correspondence graduate student at All-Union Research Institute of General and Forensic Psychiatry. In 1992, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis on "The Importance of Genotypic Signs in the Prognosis of Schizophrenia."From 1991 to 1995, he worked as a psychiatrist at the Tashkent Clinical Psychiatric Hospital and simultaneously taught at the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology at the first Tashkent State Medical Institute. During this period, he also began working on his doctoral thesis. From 1996 to 1998, while he was a doctoral candidate at the department, he completed his thesis on "Prognostic Factors in Schizophrenia: Clinical and Laboratory Research" and successfully defended it in 1999. The first Tashkent State Medical Institute was founded in 1930 and since 2001 it has been headed by Professor U.H. Alimov. He has published more than 140 scientific papers on psychiatry and narcology. Under his guidance, 6 dissertations were defended for the degree of candidate of sciences and one doctoral dissertation. Professor U. H. Alimoff has taken an active part in international conferences on psychiatry held in different countries such as India (Delhi, 2001), Poland (Warsaw, 2002), Greece (Athens 2006) Austria (Salzburg 2007), Russia (Moscow, 2101) Spain (Madrid 208) Switzerland (Geneva 209) Brazil (Braziliy 2012) USA (San Dieg 203) Singapore (204).Over the past 10 years, staff from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy has conducted scientific research on a general topic: "Clinical and Social Research of Psychopathological Disorders in Schizophrenia, Drug Addiction and Other Mental Illnesses." It is gratifying to note that approximately 10 dissertations for a degree of Candidate of Medical Science and 2 for Doctor of Science have been successfully defended during this period. The completed scientific papers fully reflect various aspects of the chosen research topic. More than 200 scientific papers, articles and abstracts have been published both in the domestic and foreign press covering various aspects of the research conducted. The staff of the department have published 3 monographs and 43 methodological recommendations. The main results of the work of the staff of the Department were reported and discussed at scientific forums and congresses in our country, the CIS countries, Europe, and the world. The results of research have been integrated into therapeutic and diagnostic practices in all medical and preventive institutions providing psychiatric services to the population in our country.
