Department history

Formation and development of the field of nephrology and extracorporeal detoxification in ancient times.

You can't go into the future without knowing the past and the present. This is certainly applicable to nephrology. Kidney diseases have been known since ancient times. Descriptions of nephrotic syndrome can be found in the manuscripts of Hippocrates, and severe kidney damage associated with urolithiasis can be traced in Egyptian manuscripts.

Although Hippocrates described edematous syndrome in the patients he observed, however, the causes of edema due to kidney, liver, and heart pathology were not always clear to him. True, he indicated that kidney disease can lead to this condition based on changes in the visual characteristics of urine.

Avicenna (980-1037) in his book "Canons" indicated that based on a visual assessment of the nature of urine, it is possible to differentiate edema associated with kidney disease from edema of liver origin.

E.M. Tareyev (1895-1986) played a major role in the development of nephrology. For decades, he studied the etiology, pathogenesis, pathomorphology, and pathobiology of autoimmune kidney diseases. In particular, he studied idiopathic (Bright's) nephritis in detail. In one of his monographs, Tareyev talks about the relationship between chronic renal failure and anemia. A number of works are devoted to secondary nephropathy: nephropathy of pregnancy, gout, rheumatism, shock, rheumatoid arthritis, myeloma, collagen cysts, hemorrhagic vasculitis, and long-term hemodialysis.

The Department of Nephrology, Hemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation was organized by the order of the rector of Tashkent Institute of Medical Sciences based on the resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated July 12, 2018 No. PP-3846 "On measures to improve the efficiency of providing nephrological and hemodialysis care to the population of the Republic of Uzbekistan."

The department was headed by MD, Professor Rustam Nurmukhamedovich Akalayev in 2018-2023. Since September 2023, the department has been headed by DSc Gulnoza Zaynitdinovna Aripxodjayeva.
