The department was organized in 1978 and was one of the first two departments of neonatology in the structure of advanced training institutes for doctors of the former USSR.
From 1978 to 1986 The department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor A.K. Kasymov.

Kasymov Abdugaffar Kasymovich. Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor. Headed the Department of Neonatology at Tashkent Institute of Internal Medicine from 1978 to 1986. Topic of the candidate's dissertation: “Study of hypo- and avitaminosis C in gastrointestinal diseases in children in the conditions of the region of the Republic of Uzbekistan.” Two candidate dissertations were defended under his leadership: M.M. Salikhov, topic: “Nonspecific immunological reactivity of newborns born in asphyxia and intracranial birth trauma.” E.V. Pikulina, topic: “Immunological changes in newborns from mothers with complicated pregnancy.” Excellent student of healthcare of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
From 1986 to 1999, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor E.V. Pikulina.

Pikulina Evgenia Valentinovna. Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor. She headed the Department of Neonatology at Tashkent Institute of Internal Medicine from 1986 to 1999. In 1992, under the leadership of Professor V.I. Krylova defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Characteristics of adaptive reactions in newborns with consequences of perinatal hypoxia, methods of correction.” Under her leadership in 1996 G.T. Khojaeva defended her PhD thesis on the topic: “Clinical and echographic criteria for perinatal brain lesions in newborns.”

From 1999 to 2017, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Mukhamedova Kh.T.

From 2017 to the present day, the head of the department is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor U.F. Nasirova.

Bychkova Galina Anatolyevna.Worked from 1982 to 1995. She defended her PhD thesis in 1992 under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor V.I. Krylov on the topic: “Mechanisms of adaptation of newborns in the early neonatal period.”

Saidakhmedov Abror Saidakhmedovich.Worked from 1985 to 1996. He defended his Ph.D. thesis in 1970 under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Professor L.S. Alexandrova on the topic: “Functional state of the pancreas in nephropathies in children.”

Rakhimova Nigora Abrarovna.Worked from 1982 to 1995. She defended her PhD thesis in 1991 under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor V.I. Krylov on the topic: “Biorhythmic membrane-dependent characteristics of adaptation of newborns with consequences of central nervous system damage.”
